Coradi Rolling Planimeter
Coradi was probably the first of European makers of precision
mechanical calculation instruments.
Prior to WWII, Vannenar Bush of MIT (then head of OSRD) was instrumental in having the first mechanical Differential Analyzer built for DoD. It was a huge mechanical analog computer for solving differential equations. It played a major role in America's war effort and was later on 'permanent' exhibit at MIT.
The electronic equivalent of the Differential Anayzer was made possible by the development of the all-important operational amplifier, the major building block, configurable to perform addition, substraction, integration, diffrentiation, etc.
The Coradi planimeter uses one type of integrator, similar in function as that in the Diff. Analyzer.
